The academic foundation built for students in the Mechanicville City School District is designed to include a mastery of basic skills, as well as to provide skills that can be used successfully upon graduation in post-secondary education and/or in the job market. The school district is divided into a K-5 and 6-12 configuration as a result of a consolidation of the former middle school joining with the former High School to form a Jr./Sr. High School.
A large percentage of graduates from Mechanicville Jr./Sr. High School pursue higher education. Approximately 85% of graduating seniors go on to further their education at the college level. Mechanicville graduates have a history of attending the Air Force Academy, Yale, Harvard, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Union College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Albany Pharmacy, SUNY campuses and other credentialed institutions. The community takes great pride in these achievements and is aware that the youth are valuable resources for the future.
The elementary school has a total enrollment of approximately 640 students. Kindergarten classes are conducted in full-day sessions. All kindergarten classes are self-contained with a full time teacher and aide working with each classroom of students. The students in grades 1-5 are heterogeneously grouped with some homogeneous regrouping for instruction in reading and mathematics.
The Jr./Sr. High School is comprised of grades 6-12 with an approximate enrollment of 690 students. The junior high school curriculum is planned through a collaborative, common team approach. The high school offers a comprehensive instructional program. In addition to the instructional program, we offer a wide range of extracurricular activities including athletics; the arts; clubs that are specific to a cause, such as SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions); and clubs that develop students’ interests such as the Drama Club.
