It is a particularly exciting time at the Mechanicville City School District. The EXCEL Project is winding down, with finishing touches being made on the major renovations to the Middle/High School campus locker rooms, pool, entrance doors, and High School cafeteria. Additionally, the District recently welcomed a new Business Manager Joanne Moran who joined us in mid-November. A new High School Principal, Kevin Kolakowski was recently appointed by the Board of Education and will be joining our district on February 1, 2010, and promises to bring new energy and insight to the Mechanicville High School. We certainly look forward to his arrival.

Unfortunately, again this year there is a great deal of uncertainty due to the financial crisis in New York State as we undertake the process of developing the school budget for the 2010-2011 school year. Hopefully, the financial impact on school districts across the State will be kept to a minimum. In order to be as fiscally responsible to our taxpayers as possible, our district has implemented a freeze on all discretionary spending for the remainder of the school year. However, as always, our number one priority is dedication to our students and to providing them with a quality education. This can be a delicate balance to achieve; but one we always strive to attain.

The Mechanicville City School district envisions a learning community for all children that is effective through a sense of trust and cooperation. Our district is committed to creating a safe, challenging and nurturing educational experience for all our students. The Board of Education, administration, teachers, support staff, families and our school community are full partners, working together to ensure all our students enjoy a successful educational experience. Our mission is to provide our students with the tools necessary, so they are armed with the skills they need to be successful 21st Century Global Citizens, effective communicators, critical thinkers, and creative problem solvers. We are educating Today’s Youth to be Tomorrow’s Leaders.

A well rounded student is a happy, successful student. Our students perform well both in and out of the classroom setting, as evidenced by our Girls Softball Team once again winning the New York State Girls Softball State Championship, our Girls Soccer Team making it to the State Finals, the Cross Country Team making great strides, and several Band students performing exceptionally well at the Northeast Instrumental Music Festival in Lake Placid.

In closing, 2009 has been a good year, let’s be thankful for all that we have achieved; and commit to work together and strive to make 2010 even better.

Sincerely,
Michael J. McCarthy, Ed.D
